World Cup 2022 Preview: Group G - Serbia

World Cup 2022 Preview: Group G – Serbia

Serbia is one of those teams that could surprise fans at the World Cup. They boast wins against Portugal, Norway, and Sweden in the last 12 months. However, they had a tough time with Denmark. They are one of those teams that’s capable of putting together an amazing outing followed by an extremely disappointing one a couple of days later. The teams that they’ll be facing in the group hope to catch them on a bad day.

What’s The Strength Of This Serbian Team?

This team seems to have decent players in every single line. That’s something that’s at times rare in the World Cup particularly for countries like Serbia that don’t have a strong local league. You’ve got a goalkeeper that is no stranger to high level competition. The back line may arguably be one of the strengths of the team, at least on paper. This is a team that has given up more than 2 goals in a game only once in about 2 years. They gave up 3 goals to Denmark this year, and then from there we have to go back to 2020 to find the other time they gave up 3 goals which was against Russia.

The ability to play teams close, and have pieces up front that are coming into the tournament hot is something that can’t be understated. Particularly for a team like this, that we have to be honest, virtually everyone across the globe wants to overlook. Switzerland, Cameroon, and especially Brazil are teams that we feel have better offensive presence than Serbia, and in the case of Cameroon and Brazil a more flamboyant, and dynamic play style. There’s still room though for these types of teams that are going to stay in their lanes and be a tough outing for anyone.

Key Players For Serbia At The World Cup

Aleksandar Mitrović is putting up Erling Haaland numbers at Fulham! This is a name that fans are going to want to learn because this man should be signed by a top club over the summer. In fact, if he has a decent tournament we wouldn’t be surprised to see him leave his current club over the winter break. The man scored 43 goals in 44 games in the Championship. Naturally he was a big reason why Fulham were able to make their way back to the Premier League. Now in the top division he’s scored 9 goals in 12 games. These are video game numbers!

Sergej Milinković-Savić is perhaps the other player that stands out from the Serbian squad. We’re not just talking about the fact that he stands out for being a 6 foot 3 offensive midfielder which is certainly rare. Despite his height he’s one of the more dynamic players in the Italian game. He also has plenty of fight from that attacking midfield position. That contributes to the balance that this team is usually able to find. That’s one of the main reasons why they are able to play everyone tight.

Our Prediction

If Serbia was in a different group they almost certainly would be a lock to make the second round. We just feel that in many ways they are a team that’s very similar to Switzerland, in that they don’t do anything extremely well, but they do nothing horribly wrong. Ultimately the Swiss seem to have more talent. This is not a prediction that we’d take to the bank though! Don’t sleep on Aleksandar Mitrović. Even with the national team that guy is scoring goals left and right. The group though is just too talented for them at this point. They’ll give every team including Brazil plenty of fits!
