World Cup 2022 Preview: Group D - Denmark

World Cup 2022 Preview: Group D – Denmark

The Danish team is coming into the 2022 World Cup with an aging generation of players that’s recently been infused with some youth particularly up top. The hope is that mixture is going to allow them to compete into the late stages of the World Cup in Qatar. Virtually every single team that’s going to play in Qatar is looking to have a structure that features solid players on every line. Denmark is able to boast exactly that!

It starts with Kasper Schmeichel between the sticks. He’s on the back nine of his career, but he can still be a solid presence in goal. Andreas Christensen at center back certainly hasn’t been as consistent at Barcelona as head coach Kasper Hjulmand would like him to be. At the end of the day though he’s a decent player. The miraculous return of Christian Eriksen to that offensive midfield spot may provide the team with the spark it needs. Particularly since as we’ve stated they got real young up front.

They’ve Recently Beat France Can They Do It Again At The World Cup?

This is really the main question that this team is going to have to answer heading into the World Cup. In fact, if they play France to a draw at the tournament they could have a chance to advance to the next round without too much trouble. If they are able to advance in first place in the group, which on paper they shouldn’t be able to do, that improves their chances of making a deep run.

Both Tunisia, and Australia look like much more comfortable outings. They are not teams that we can just overlook though. Australia has been known to play tough competition hard. They did that with France in the last World Cup. They’ve done so against teams like Italy, and the Netherlands and previous tournaments. Our big question with Denmark heading into the tournament may just be if they can get past what is seemingly lower level competition.

Denmark Are Set To Be A Tough Team Do They Have Enough To Advance Deep Into The Tournament?

The thing with Denmark is that they can play any team tough. They are not a matchup that you want to have. Particularly heading into the direct elimination rounds. As we mentioned this is a team that’s well balanced across the board. Perhaps the only doubt that we have is if they are going to be able to be efficient up front. They can end up being one of those teams that if they find a goal it’s going to be hard to get an equalizer.

Still, we have a couple of doubts about what the team is going to look like in the attacking third. No offense to any previous Denmark strikers of recent years. The fact though, that there haven’t been too many important Danish strikers within this generation that has returned Denmark to top tournaments allows them to take more chances with young players. That could prove to be an advantage for sure!

Our Prediction

This is a team that should be able to complete the group stage in either of the first two spots in the group and advance. If they get Argentina in the round of 16 it’s hard to see them going any further. The Argentina team is just too talented. We’ve seen more surprising things than that though. Oddly enough Mexico or Poland would love to see them in the next round if they win the group. So would Denmark! This is a good team that probably didn’t get a lucky draw, and that’s why we predict that they’ll be out in the round of 16!
