After the surprise loss in the series to Toluca, Club America fans seem blood thirsty, and they want some players gone before the start of next season. In the media, and on Twitter perhaps no other player got more criticism than Diego Valdes. The former Santos player has been at Club America for two seasons, and he hasn’t been able to find the form that he exhibited at Santos. What fans complain most about his lack of effort. Particularly in the two games against Toluca.
Oddly enough Valdes did have a couple of chances to find the back of the net, particularly in the first game. He found himself right in front of the goal defended by Thiago Volpi from outside the box. His shot though went wide. From there, he really wasn’t able to impact the game at all. Making most of the criticisms against him somewhat valid.
Should Club America Look To Get Rid of Diego Valdes?
It’s not necessarily fair to say that Diego Valdes is solely responsible for Club America being ousted in the semi finals. It may be fair to say that he hasn’t found his best form with Club America. He’s potentially the only player in the Club America offense that didn’t have a shining moment throughout the tournament. He made some plays throughout the season for sure, but he was without a doubt overshadowed by the success that Henry Martin, and Alejandro Zendejas had. The problem for Valdes is that his contributions to the team are not important enough for Club America executives to overlook the fans’ outcry over his performance.
In fact, it could be argued that someone like Roger Martinez hasn’t done any better with Club America over his time at the club. Federico Viñas could be added to the list as well. While we can’t say that Valdes’ performance is way worse than what we’ve seen from those two over their time at Club America. The problem is fans are seemingly fed up with Valdes. He may end up being used as the scapegoat in this situation. The team has Brian Rodríguez as someone who can take over that spot in a starting role. Valdes may have a market in Mexico or MLS, so it could be a good idea to let him go!
He’s Not The Only Player That’s On The Fans’ Naughty List
Memo Ochoa is the other player that’s on the Club America fans’ naughty list. His contract is up with the club, and there are rumors surrounding him of all sorts. The fact is that at this point we can’t verify any of the rumors, that is the reason why we haven’t necessarily addressed the story head yet. There are certain sources out there that claim Ochoa is getting ready to sign a new deal which will keep him at Club America for at least two more years. The way that the season ended for the team though could derail those contract talks.
There’s already speculation that if Ochoa does not extend his contract the team would be looking to bring back Argentine goalkeeper Agustin Marchesin. The big issue for Club America is that both Ochoa, and Oscar Jimenez the back-up goalkeeper don’t have an active contract with the team. Ochoa has always had a love-hate relationship with the fans. He, too, could be used as a culprit of the elimination and forced to leave the squad. There’s already rumors suggesting he may have a future in MLS if he’s not able to come to an agreement with Club America. He’s also been linked with Mallorca, in a possible return to LaLiga.
