Cristiano Ronaldo’s New Manager Says He Preferred Messi – More Trouble For CR7?

Cristiano Ronaldo just can’t catch a break with his most recent managers. In his final 6 months at Manchester United his relationship with manager Erik ten Hag was never a positive one. We spoke about it multiple times on the site. At the World Cup things seem to have broken down between himself and Portugal coach Fernando Santos. With his wife even questioning the manager’s loyalty to CR7 on social media after Ronaldo was left on the bench for the team’s round of 16 matchup. All that though would certainly change when Ronaldo moved to Saudi Arabia … right?

As far as we know Cristiano Ronaldo has not even been in a single training session with his new club. However, there’s already controversy brewing between himself and coach Rudi Garcia. Garcia was asked by reporters about the recent Cristiano Ronaldo signing. He mentioned that he would’ve preferred to sign Lionel Messi right after the final at the World Cup! Is Cristiano in for another drama filled season at yet another club?

Why Would Rudi Garcia Say That?

When the news about Rudi Garcia saying that he would’ve preferred Messi came out the first thing that probably everyone was thinking, was why would he say that? It just comes across as another old time manager who wants to exert control over star players. This is exactly the issue that we saw play out with Erik ten Hag. He was never able to find common ground to be able to relate to Ronaldo, and instead he just made moves to ensure that everyone knew that he was the man in charge. It’s probably hard enough to deal with Cristiano Ronaldo’s ego. At least judging from the latest stops in Portugal and Manchester United it’s pretty clear Ronaldo is not easy to deal with.

In this situation though, it’s clear that the manager also seems to have a pretty big ego. It’s hard to see things playing out well for both Ronaldo and Garcia at this point. Of course, things could certainly turn around, but talk about starting off on the wrong foot. In a lot of ways though, this issue speaks to Rudi Garcia’s ego as well. Which is something that is sometimes not talked about enough. It’s easy to bash players for throwing fits on the bench like Ronaldo has done as of late. However, certain managers seem to be completely willing to go against their own team’s best interests to satisfy their own ego. Rudi Garcia is just the latest example of that.

Is Portugal Better Without Cristiano Ronaldo?

Cristiano Is Going To Have Full Power

Ultimately this Rudi Garcia power move can backfire rather quickly. There are literally thousands of fans looking for ways to watch the team’s games now that Ronaldo is going to the Saudi League. It would make no sense for the team to still differ to a coach that isn’t willing to cater to Ronaldo. If Rudi Garcia isn’t able to get along with Cristiano he’s going to be out of a job. That’s just a fact, and he shouldn’t think otherwise.

It makes no sense at all that he would come out and say that he wanted Messi over him. Unless he’s got an offer from another team that he’d like to consider, and he wants to get out of his contract quickly. Which could be in the cards. He’s probably earning quite a bit of money himself in Saudi Arabia as well. However, he’s someone who’s made a name for himself particularly in the French game. Maybe he doesn’t want to cater to Ronaldo’s every move, and he’s looking to get out of his contract. That’s the only way that the Messi comments make any sense!
