Could Marchesin Be Close To Returning To Club America Due To An Ongoing Lawsuit

Could Marchesin Be Close To Returning To Club America Due To An Ongoing Lawsuit

A new twist in the Club America goalkeeper situation has emerged after it’s been revealed that the Club won a lawsuit against Portuguese side Porto, over the signings of Agustin Marchesin, and Matheus Uribe. Back in 2019 both clubs agreed to send the two players for a total of 20 million dollars from Club America to Porto. At the time, management at Club America probably thought that they had struck a great deal.

The problem was, at least according to court documents, that Porto never paid that money in full. Porto still owes Club America money steaming back from that 2019 agreement. Can this end up being an avenue through which Agustin Marchesin or Matheus Uribe could find themselves back at Coapa? It seems rather unlikely due to circumstances. We’ll break things down for you here!

The Money That Porto Owes Club America Isn’t Necessarily Significant, But They Could Strike A Deal

According to documents published by FIFA, Club America has been awarded at least part of the settlement that they were seeking due to Porto’s missed payments. Porto owes Club America around 800,000 euros, plus 5% interest rate from the date of the final payment to the day of the ruling. If Porto doesn’t pay up quickly the debt could certainly start adding up.

What does this all mean for the Club America goalkeeper situation? The thing is Marchesin has already been sold by Porto to Celta de Vigo. The former America goalkeeper signed with the Spanish club until 2025. If things get messier in court and the team’s can’t come to an agreement Club America could push to make the transfer to Vigo void on the grounds that they were never fully paid for the player to begin with. It’s not likely though, that Club America would go that route. The irony of the situation though is that what Porto has to pay Club America is seemingly more money than what they sold Marchesin for.

If the sides were to strike a deal for a player, that player may very well be the other half of the original deal, Matheus Uribe. The 31 year old Colombian central midfielder is still part of the Porto squad that is currently competing in the Primeira Liga. A deal involving his return to Mexico would be much easier to make.

Was The Ochoa Situation Stalling Because Of A Potential Marchesin Return?

As previously stated there is in essence a legal route that Club America could pursue to try and get Agustin Marchesin back to Coapa. In reality though, that would be an exhausting issue for all parties involved. Including Celta de Vigo who are actually using Marchesin currently as their first choice goalkeeper. Really for Club America it seems like all roads lead to them resigning Guillermo Ochoa. The other option that’s on the table is going after Atlas’ Camilo Vargas. The Colombian goalkeeper has been tied to Cruz Azul in the last few hours, but there is an active working relationship between Grupo Orlegi, and Televisa. This could make Club America leapfrog Cruz Azul.

Just yesterday we mentioned that Club America was looking to strike a deal with Grupo Orlegi that would see Fernando Gorrearan end up in Coapa, and central midfielder Pedro Aquino going to Atlas. It seems more likely that Club America would pursue a way to make Camilo Vargas part of the deal in fact they do want to get rid of Ochoa. At this point though, both the Vargas option, and especially the Marchesin idea seem like long shots. At this point in time it still seems like Club America wants to work things out with Ochoa.
