Club America’s Potential Title Run - Teams They’ll Likely Face

Club America’s Potential Title Run – Teams They’ll Likely Face

There’s no doubt that Club America are coming in as the favorites to win the title in these upcoming Liga MX playoffs. Although the team saw their win streak snapped after the game that they tied 3-3 with Santos, they’re still headed into the post season red-hot. This is not a position that Club America isn’t accustomed to though. With Santiago Solari they found themselves in the top spots on the table twice heading into the playoffs. In both instances they got bounced rather quickly. They even had that hurtful loss to Chivas in the playoffs back in 2020.

Speaking of Chivas we want to look into the potential matchups that Club America could face in the playoffs. Although on paper Club America should be able to handle any opponent, Liga MX is like boxing, styles make fights. There are certain clubs that could make Club America’s quest for the title all the more difficult.

A First Round Matchup With Chivas?

Club America vs Chivas - Why This Can Be The Best Clasico In Years

Since Club America picked up the number one spot on the table they are going to be facing the lowest ranked team from the remaining ones after the wild card round. Traditionally we would see number 1 versus number 8 in this round. With the wild card round now we could see number 1 face number 12! If all of the home team’s win then Club America would face Puebla in a rematch of the teams’ last game of the regular season which America won in Puebla.

If any of the away teams win, Club America will forcefully face the lowest ranked away team that wins in the wild card round. There’s a good chance that that team will be Chivas. At this point it may not be in Club America’s best interest to face Chivas. Their last game was really contested, and it’s a game that runs high with emotions. Although it would be great for the fans, an “El Clasico” to start their title run may be a tough outing.

Tigres or A Cruz Azul Rematch For The Semi Finals

If Club America keeps advancing they will have to face the lowest ranking remaining team. For the semi final round that team could very well be Tigres. They ranked 5 in the regular season, and have been a bit inconsistent, but they are one of those teams that could beat anyone in the league on any given day. Just think about a Chivas, then Tigres matchup for Club America. That would be quite the gauntlet that they would have to go through to even reach the finals. That’s why Liga MX is so cruel sometimes. Even the number one ranked team in the regular season can have a tough path to the title.

An easier path for Club America could be a rematch with Cruz Azul. There’s no reason to hide this, Club America seems to have Cruz Azul’s number. The tricky thing about this matchup is that Cruz Azul would be coming into the matchup with nothing to lose, and the pressure would be on America for sure.

A Finals Matchup Versus Monterrey

This is potentially the matchup that we all want to see. Monterrey had a great season finishing second in the table. They were just overshadowed by what America was doing, but at the end of the day they were only separated by 3 points. There’s an argument to be made that Monterrey is a more balanced, better coached team than America. It would seemingly be heartbreaking for an America team to have come so far, and lose in the finals. Even though the team had a great season they could still be facing incredibly tough matchups to lift the trophy. If things line up sort of how we predict they can be considered one of the best champions ever in Liga Mx if they pull through!
