Christian Pulisic’s Injury Couldn’t Have Come At A Worse Time

Christian Pulisic’s Injury Couldn’t Have Come At A Worse Time

According to The Athletic Christian Pulisic is going to be out for “at least a couple of months”. The information was confirmed by Chelsea manager Graham Potter. Pulisic got a rare start for the London club in a midweek Premier League fixture against Manchester City. The American was removed from the pitch after picking up an injury in the 18th minute of the match. There’s been no clear sense of what the injury is, but Potter said that Pulisic is going to be out at least until March. Although he said that he hoped Christian could come back sooner!

This Pretty Much Kills His Transfer Hopes

There had been speculation over whether Pulisic would make a move in this current transfer window. Having picked up an injury that’s going to sideline him for pretty much half of what’s left of the season it just doesn’t make any sense for a team to pick him up on loan. If we’re being optimistic this could turn out to be a blessing in disguise for Christian.

He’s contracted to Chelsea until 2024. Perhaps the lack of minutes that he’s seen so far this season could’ve pushed him to make a move to another squad for the rest of the season. Since he picked up what seems to be a knee injury he’s likely going to be staying put. This could give him a chance to get right and really fight for a starting role heading into the 2023-2024 season which is the last one on his contract. We have to also remember that Pulisic was banged up in the World Cup. So he was already nursing some issues heading into the re-start of the Premier League season. Some time off could help him regain his focus.

A Felix Pulisic Pairing Seems Unlikely

Perhaps the injury to Pulisic is exactly why Chelsea ultimately decided to pull the trigger on the Joao Felix signing. The team is currently in 10th place in the league. The spot gives you no European football for next season. It makes perfect sense that Chelsea would want to gear up to make a late season push here. Even though they’re way off the title chase they could still sneak into European competition.

Sadly, the Pulisic injury also pretty much means that a Joao Felix pairing with Christian up top for Chelsea is going to be unlikely. We know that it’s definitely not going to happen for the next couple of months. As previously stated Pulisic being out actually seems to be that tipping point that forced Chelsea’s hand to win the bid for Felix. Clubs like Arsenal were also interested in the Portuguese player. A good showing from Felix in blue could ultimately push Christian off the team. Even though we may want to be positive, the future looks grim for the American.

Leaving Chelsea In The Summer

Since the winter transfer window has basically all but closed for Christian Pulisic it’s the summer that he has to look forward to. We can’t really say that Christian’s move to Chelsea has been a success. While he’s had his moments he’s found it hard to gain the trust of the different managers that he’s had at the club. With that in mind it wouldn’t be odd to see him look for a transfer in the summer.

There are going to be different options for him. He could for example be a part of a package that sees Jude Bellingham end up at Chelsea with him returning to Borussia Dortmund. At this point in his career it could make sense for him to want to return to Germany where he looked his best. Any move within England would probably see him land a lower tier club. That’s not necessarily something that looks to be too appealing for him
