Carlos Salcedo Could Be Sidelined Considerable Time Thanks To Bizarre Mid-Game Tweet

Tuesday’s slate of games saw a bizarre first in Liga MX history, at least we think that’s what happened. If you’re not aware of how things played out let us fill you in. Beto Acosta of Juarez FC was sent off in the final minutes of the first half of the team’s game against Club Leon on a double yellow card. The decision by referee Jorge Abraham Camacho was a controversial one to say the least.

Upon watching the replay it seems that there’s minimal contact on the play. However, from the ref’s vantage point on the field he saw Acosta lift his boot, and press down to step on the foot of the Club Leon player. The problem for Juarez FC is that yellow cards can’t be overturned by VAR. Salcedo started shouting insults into the crowd after the play, although upon further review it seemed that he was actually trying to amp up the Juarez executives that were up in a box to put some pressure on the ref.

The Infamous Tweet

Just a few moments after the controversial red card to Acosta the first half ended, and Juarez players naturally made their way to the locker room. Seemingly from the locker room Salcedo decided to tweet out a message complaining about the refs.

The tweet (in Spanish) read, “Great @LigaBBVAMX, with these refs! They want to steal the show, great!!” As was potentially expected Salcedo would go on to delete the tweet, but the issue didn’t end there. The damage was obviously done, and his criticism of the refs could see him receive a fine or some forced time off. We’ll get to that in a bit though.

Salcedo Would Go On To Be A Big Reason Why His Team Lost The Game

The halftime tweet would go on to become the detonator for a series of unfortunate events that had Salcedo as the main character, and lead to not only Juarez’s downfall in the game, but also a ban for Salcedo for the upcoming game. The Club Leon goal that ultimately proved to be the game winner came about because Salcedo who had the ball fully under control, right on the edge of his own box decided it was a good idea to try out some new moves that he learned in his brief time in Canada.

What happened next was basically what you would’ve expected to happen. Salcedo almost trips while trying out his aforementioned new moves. Ultimately he gives up possession to

Leon striker Lucas Di Yorio who quickly turns the change of possession into a shot on goal at the near post. It seems like Alfredo Talavera could’ve done a little more to bail Salcedo out, but ultimately age, and bad positioning lead to him conceding the goal.

For Now Salcedo Is Out At Least For One Game

Apart from having an unforced error that led to the Club Leon goal Salcedo would go on to commit a foul that saw him receive his fifth yellow card this season. This means that no matter what happens he’s going to miss at least the next game with Juarez FC. At the time of writing this article Liga MX have not officially announced any further sanctions imposed on Salcedo. The announcement could come Thursday when all of this Wednesday’s games are finished, and the disciplinary commission announces all of the sanctions that it will hand down for incidents that took place this week.

The most recent precedent that we have of a similar incident is the suspension that was handed down to Aldo de Nigris, Monterrey’s assistant coach. The former striker tweeted a money emoji after a controversial decision against his squad, and was banned from the team bench for one game. That means Salcedo should get at least 2 weeks off.
